TESTIMONIALS...

From a Mothers Heart...

My son, Adam was in Children's Hospital Los Angeles for twenty-seven days.  On July second, Happy Hats came to the hospital to distribute hats to the patients, parents, siblings, doctors, nurses and staff.  You came into Adam's room and gave him a gorgeous Fourth of July hat in red, white and blue.  I can't tell you how much it lifted his spirits to receive that hat.  While you were in his room, his surgeon came to visit and also received a beautiful hat.  Adam thought it was great that his doctor was wearing a funny hat.  It took some of the pain out of the doctor's visit.  The entire atmosphere of the hospital was transformed by those hats.  Adam loved his hat so much and now proudly displays it in his room at home.

I also want to complement the people who make the hats.  They do a great job.  The hats are high quality, very creative, and very well made.  You can tell that a lot of love and pride went into making them.

Three cheers to you and your whole organization!!

Sincerely,
Ellen Winthrop Michel, Los Angeles

From a Doctor's Heart...

The need for love, tenderness, play and fun are sometimes as important to the healing process as modern day medical/surgical interventions. Having a cancer-ridden, balding child connected to multiple IV bags smile and giggle with excitement is a rare and treasured sight.

Recently, a Happy Hat Day visit was made to the waiting room of the Surgical Center.  Here at their worst were parents waiting for news of their child's operation.  When Happy Hats appeared, we could all see their faces relax and their demeanor change.  If that wasn't enough, doctors and nurses wearing the hats on top of their surgical scrub hats was enough to lighten anyone's load.

On behalf of the entire hospital, our patients and their families, I want to personally thank you and your generous contribution to the well being of our children and families during their healing process.  The kind of commitment that you have illustrates the true meaning of a community hero.

Sincerely,
Stuart E. Siegel, MD
Director, Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases
Children's Hospital Los Angeles

From a Warden's Heart...

As the Warden at the California Institution for Women, the state's oldest prison for women, I would like to share how your program has enabled the inmates to give back to the community.

I would like to share just one of the experiences I had during a happy hat distribution at the hospital that sums up the intent of the program.  There was a boy in his room, alone, with a look of despair on his face.  I went in and asked him if he wanted a "Happy Hat".  He answered yes, but indicated that he wanted the one I was wearing.  I took it off and gave it to him and suddenly a smile began to emerge and grow from ear to ear.  Then a laugh, and soon some of the hospital staff started coming in - the room was soon full of joy.  As I left the room, I noticed a nurse outside crying.  I asked her what was wrong and she said that the boy had not smiled or laughed since his arrival to the hospital, it was like a miracle.  The Happy Hat had once again faithfully performed its task.

These hats are part of a healing process for not only the children who receive them, but for the inmates as well.
