Happy Hats for Kids, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Torrance, CA. was founded in 1991 by Sheri Schrier after the loss of her brother, mother, father and grandmother to cancer. She saw the physical and emotional trauma caused by hair loss from drugs, as well as unseen wounds; loss of self-esteem, isolation, sadness and fear. As a hat designer and manufacturer it was a natural for Sheri to design a collection of adorable fun hats. Her goal was to help bring smiles back to the precious faces of children suffering with cancer, AIDS and other devastating illnesses and injuries. Sheri and hundreds of committed volunteers have sewn our special laugh evoking Happy Hats for sick children in more than 100 hospitals throughout the United States and Israel.
Sheri and her husband Gene created a successful Hero Club Program in 2003. Upon admittance each child receives a complimentary Hero Club gift package, which includes a colorful, fun, felt Hero Hat and a 96 page Hero Club story/activity book and crayons. The illustrated story helps ease a hospitalized child's anxieties and fears with entertaining activities and educational information explaining basic hospital procedures in a child-friendly manner. The puzzles, games, jokes and coloring pages help to minimize a child's boredom and feelings of isolation. The activities benefit a child with mental stimulation during their absence from school. The book gives families an opportunity to interact with their child in a playful way. A french version of the Hero Club Program is in Canadian hospitals.
Thanks to our many sponsors and donors, Happy Hats for Kids has uplifted the spirits of nearly one million sick children and their families within the past 16 years.
